From Cancel Events to Inclusion Rules

A short method for turning cancel and lapse events into cohorts people can trust.

Every durable churn cohort needs an inclusion rule: the events, properties, and windows that qualify a cancel or lapse. Vague labels like “at risk” invite disagreement the first time finance uses them.

Write the rule so another analyst can rebuild it without you. Name the events, the lookback, and the exclusions—staff accounts, failed payments, and incomplete trials.

Once the rule is stable, attach one primary outcome the cohort is meant to improve. That pairing turns subscription analytics into insight instead of decoration.
